Gemstones of the World: Newly Revised Fifth Edition Description
Newly published in a fifth edition, this definitive guide takes the mystery out of appreciating, buying and selling gemstones. It covers everything from the romance and history of more than 1,800 gemstones to their geographic locations; scientific, physical and colour properties; and the way they are formed, structured and mined. The book also fully covers the optical features of gems - light and colour, luminescence, refraction and inclusions - and key information about the densities and chemical elements of each stone, with fascinating details on different cuts, polishing, gems, hardness, cleavage, classification, trade names, rarity and more. There are also many charts and diagrams as well as magnificent colour photographs of the stones with data about them on the facing page. If you want only one book on gemstones in your library, this would be the one!

I have the earlier 4th edition of this wonderful book. They should have stopped at 4 editions because this new reprint is an insult to the author. The pages are misnumbered and the information is confusing. It is cheap but not even worth that amount of money. I paid a small fortune for my 4th edition but it was worth every penny. It is the Bible of Gems and a terrible shame that they butchered a great book by publishing that trashy 5th edition. I returned the book without opening it because I had seen my friends edition, which she also returned.

I bought the fourth "revised and expanded" edition several years ago. Nice book.
Couldn't help but notice that, according to Amazon's info on the two editions, the newer one is nearly 50 pages shorter than the 4th. Has a chapter or something been taken out? I notice that one of the reviews here says that the page numbers are messed up in the newer one, so maybe they actually have the same amount of pages with incorrect page numbers accounting for the difference?! Does anyone know what the differences are between the two editions?
The 4th edition is five years old, so it's probably not all that outdated. Rocks are probably about the same nowadays. :-)
